INTERSNHIPS
The Lakota People’s Law Project is looking for hard-working, experienced, qualified interns interested in current issues affecting Native American communities for fall semester, summer, or spring semester internships to assist in our main office in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Qualifications
Potential Interns must have completed at least one year of college with 3.0 GPA or higher and with research, writing, and/or website experience. Legal interns may be first, second or third year law students with 3.3 GPA or higher and must have ample legal research and writing experience. Interns need to have an interest in civil rights or Indian law and to be self-motivated, independent, and responsible. Experience in Lakota or other native communities preferred.
Responsibilities may include:
Work with other staff to gather information critical to the understanding of important issues.
Interview potential plaintiffs, community members, and government employees.
Assist with administrative work.
Write legal memos and briefs as assigned by the attorneys.
Legal research as assigned by the attorneys.
Maintain the organization’s website.
Work with Tribal governments to collect further data.
Internship must be at least six weeks long, but eight or more weeks are preferred.
Compensation
Housing is provided for summer interns. Please speak with your Career Services staff about potential funding. Stipends are available if funding from your university is unavailable.
